Apparently it’s 300D day ... can you tell I’m bored at work? I bought this car, in dark blue, on December 31, 1987. $34,800, tex not leather, and the hood ornament would be stolen within days.

Hard to say. It looks very well taken care of, but for that money there are so many other things I would consider. Maybe a 300D die hard would pay that much for it?

If I had a do-over I’d get a W123 wagon - the 5 cylinder is tougher than the 6 in this car (trust me).

Damn. It’s probably the best condition 87 Merc in the world, and maybe someone will pay 9k because of it, but I sure wouldn't.

Talk about condition: I almost posted this car, but it’s so clearly CP that it’s no fun at all.

Yikes. If I had lots of disposable income for random cars, I may consider the wagon for the price of the sedan. But there are other 30 year old cars I would much rather have for 20k-30k.

My thought regarding that wagon is as follows: 1) it’s worth about 10 grand less than that; 2a) but let’s say I’m willing to pay 20 grand for it; 2b) for that same 20 grand there are plenty of much newer wagons out there that have front and side curtain airbags, better crumple zones, better brakes, ESC, and on and on. My ‘87 300D was unusual because it had a driver’s side airbag and ABS. It was a bit ahead of its time, but it’s behind now. Give me something with more modern ABS, side airbags, and that’s generally more sophisticated. /rant

My thought was that 26k is good R107 money, with enough left over for something else. Or generally something fancier/faster/sportier of similar vintage.

Indeed, or you could find a previous gen SL with high miles but in good shape.

CP. Looks nice and all but I could find a handful on my local craigslist for less than half of that money still in decent condition. You don’t buy a 300d to be a garage/show queen. You buy it to drive it [forever], so big deal if the paint is a little faded and it’s got a couple dents.

I had an ‘87 - the W123 would be a better choice to drive forever.

Definitely. Or even a non-turbo.

Time to relive the past and buy another!

So I should spend $495/month to garage a $5,000 car? Nope.
